Thoracic Surgeon- Surgical Removal of tumours over the thorax and chest wall

God has imparted us, a security chamber to protect the most vital organs of the body i.e. Heart and Lungs, called as the Thoracic/Rib Cage.
It is a bony structure which completely encloses these vital organs, protecting them from injuries, trauma and other agents.
Surgeries performed on the thorax, or on the vital organs enclosed by the thorax, are included in the head, ‘Thoracic Surgery
These include Procedures on:
1) Heart
2) Lungs, including Tracts
3) Oesophagus
4) Respiratory Muscles

As thorax forms a rigid covering over the heart and lungs, it has to be surgically displaced/ moved/ shifted.Various procedures, such as Surgical Administration of Prosthetic (Artificial) Valves, Open heart surgery, Surgical Removal of tumours over the thorax and chest wall. Many congenital conditions of the spine, directly or indirectly affect the thoracic spine, most significant being Scoliosis.

Also, pulmonary conditions have a role in this. Patients with COPD or Pleuritis have stiff lower ribs, which restrict mobility of the thorax & chest wall.Ribs, though being rigid and bony, can be classed as one of the most delicate bones in the body. Also, as the deep seated organs are life sustaining, care must be taken to ensure maximal safety during the procedure. Also, the medical practitioner should take care for the Post- Operative Management of the same. By- Rounak Bose
