HEALTHCARE GOING DIGITAL

The boom in technology has not only expanded, but also improvised the health care sector a lot. The health care industry is so heavily dependent on it, that it is practically impossible to seperate the two.

If I ask you the role of technology in health care, most of you will reply things like modern equipments, better surgical machinery and speedy health care delivery. While that indeed is true, these days complete health care has been digitized.

A Medical Practice Management System (MPMS) is a software which interlaces the daily operations of a patient and doctor. It records the ABCs of a patient's health care like medical history, demographics, lab reports, prescriptions, physical examination results, discharge requirements, medical accounting, immunization schedule and much more. It literally takes care of all the needs of a patient and the best part about is that all of it is on a single online platform. The incoming of MPMS has eliminated all the needs of documentation and calendaring. It is like your personal medical assistant.

The different divisions present in the health care industry are inter-linked as well as inter-dependent. The expansion of MPMS gives a boost to other divisions like online medical advice and electronic health records. Hence, MPMS is good for the economy as well.

Don't be outdated and make your health care digital. Adopt the online medical apprentice, MPMS.

PUBLIC HEALTH: A SCIENCE

Public health is a combination of a number of fields, like anthropology, public policy, biology, medicine, psychology, and a lot more. Public health professionals identify problems and issues particular to a demographic and come up with plans and solutions to these problems. They develop policies and projects that help individual and group health efforts.
Public health is not rigidly confined to meaning a disease free population. It also implies that the population should be mentally satisfied and happy, as well as engaged in some productive activity. The fact that public health institutions have been mushrooming through out the country shows the government’s seriousness in churning out public health professionals who will, in turn, generate innovative and effective solutions to the existing problems.

It is also the duty of these public health professionals to organize task forces that roll up their sleeves and get to the very bottom of the pit, thus undertaking the task of giving health education to the most “at risk” group, the underprivileged sections of society. They must also ensure that healthcare is actually indeed accessible to the “public” that it is meant for and does not go into the wrong hands. Public health is thus and up and coming field which will integrate medicine with its social responsibility. By- Sukanya

MEDICAL PHYSICS: DOUBLE TROUBLE?

For patrons of the arts, like myself, these two words sound heavy enough to sink our artistic ship - Medicine and physics, both? Together? Seems like nothing short of a nightmare, and something, which is definitely beyond our comprehension. But sit back and relax.

There is nothing so complicated about medical physics that we cannot understand. As the self explanatory term entails, medical physics is the application of the principles of physics to the field of medicine. Medicine needs physics to have a curative effect. To arrive at a cure for a disease, physics is needed. For example, a patient shows symptoms like nausea, vomiting, headache and so on.

To identify the exact cause or to confirm suspicions, oftentimes an X ray is needed, and in more severe cases, a CT scan is needed. And that is where physics comes in. That’s it! That’s how simple the term and its meaning are. The fascinating comradeship of medicine and physics seeks to combat and destroy a number of diseases, which each field on its own could not have managed to do. So, there it is, the highly destructive sounding words, simply explained! By - Sukanya

SKIN PROBLEMS? HEAD TO A DERMATOLOGIST 'NOW'

You ask a random person for skin care advice and you'll get a bunch of it. While some people believe in the conventional granny's old remedies, a lot have come up with their own, fusing elements from different remedies. There is a self proclaimed skin care specialist in every second person you encounter. While some advice can be useful and can actually work it is best to see a professional. Skin is the most sensitive sense organ and needs special attention and care. It is wise to consult a dermatologist, a skin care specialist, before experimenting different remedies and treatments on our skin. A dermatologist also deals with problems of hair, lips and even nails.

Recent statistical trends show that dermatology is constituting a major part of the health care's contribution to India's GDP. This is due to the hike in demand for cosmetic and plastic surgery. While this is a plus point for the dermatology, health care sector and Indian economy as a whole it has indirectly created a lot of gaps or differences and divided people into two groups: the haves and have nots.

Delhi NCR always boasts of having the highest number of doctors of any field, including dermatology. Dermatologists are further specialized in fields like cosmetics, laser, pediatric and many more. Details about all the dermatologists along with their speciality, profile and reviews can be found on the handy e-health care site, MEDICOSA.

ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORDS IN INDIA

Electronic Medical Record (EMR) is a technique used in noting the observations, diagnosis, treatment & any other medical parameter, electronically using the latest technology.
It can be described as a Summary of Any Observation or a Record, that is produced during any Clinical Observation or/and Practise.
Electronic Medical Record (EMR) is basically any technique used in noting the observations, diagnosis, treatment, and any other medical parameter, electronically!
We always make sure what we do, during any hour of the day, is arranged and well managed, so as to avoid any conflict.
Similarly, Any EMR/EHR has to be well managed and well arranged. The information uploaded in it should be arranged, as there is no problem in finding it when is needed the most, and using it to its full potential.

Electronic records are highly useful in many ways such as:-

  • Medical history goes paperless now
  • Healthcare costs are highly reduced
  • Empowering the doctors to be able to deliver right treatment at the right time
  • Practice of evidence-based medicine is being promoted
  • Lifespan of the health records have now increased. Concept of forever implies over here.
  • safety with access, audit and authorization can now be done easily

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF IMMUNITY

Everyone is different. Really. Each person is made up of unique cells, atoms and molecules. Each one of us has a different genetic make up, and that is what makes all of us unique. It makes all the more challenging for the practitioners of medicine to cure! Our immune system is an integral structure in our body, which protects us against diseases. It is what keeps your common cold from escalating into full-fledged pneumonia.
To think what would happen if our immune system gets compromised is certainly unnerving. Basically, it is the defense system of the body. Clinical immunology studies the very diseases that affect our disease fighting mechanism. Intriguing, indeed! There are different types of immunology, ranging from immunotherapy, cancer immunology, diagnostic immunology, to reproductive immunology. Different types of diseases affect the immune system differently. Allergies are also a type of immune disorder, though they may not seem so important while looking at the bigger picture. However, no immune disorder is too small, as one minor complication can be responsible for a collapse in our entire human body function. Therefore, it is important to be aware of one’s allergies and not ignore certain medical conditions or implications of impending problems. By - Sukanya

CAN YOU SEE ? FOR HOW LONG ?

Not all of us can boast of a 6/6 vision report card from our ophthalmologist. In fact, a lot of people are made to wear glasses from a very young age. Haven’t you felt heartbroken at least once in your life on having seen a tiny child of hardly 5 years of age burdened with the weight of those tolling glasses ? for some things we can blame too much television, or in these days, laptops and smartphones. For others, there is the infamous “gene pool” to blame.
As for the rest, they are just a product of unfortunate and unfavourable circumstances, like having that itch in your eye due to pollutants in the air or contracting conjunctivitis from an infectious friend , or even strangers! The point that needs to be driven home is that eye care is important , and so is the medicine that is prescribed as a diagnostic or remedial measure. Ocular pharmacology can be as simple as the eye drops you and eye use, to the liquid we keep our contact lenses in. What is important is that we get our ocular advice from certified professionals and put nothing but the best quality products into our eyes. What would life be with impaired or compromised vision, can you imagine ? So just be a little more careful with yourself, and a little more sympathetic towards those less fortunate.

ARE YOU HEALTHY ENOUGH?

If you have long work hours, loads of household chores, are socially very active and glued to your electronic gadgets, I'm assuming that you're compromising on your health while keeping up with the rapid pace of the expanding world. While it's important to earn your bread and butter, be updated about the rest of the world, stay in touch with your friends and relatives, it's equally important to live a healthy life.

We all perceive the term 'healthy' in different ways and the most acceptable definition of healthy would be a state of condition in which you're physically, mentally and emotionally stable. You're free of diseases, are fit and lead a safe and jolly life. This may sounds notional to some but living a healthy life is very much possible.

We must exercise or do some physical activity daily, follow a healthy diet, drink fluids and sleep well. We must also consult a doctor periodical and get regular health check-ups done. This ensures that we're completely free of all diseases. A doctor should also be consulted in case of any health related ambiguity.

Nowadays, thanks to the Internet, book online appointment with doctors has become damn easy. No emails, text messages or phone calls are required, just a single mouse click. Also, sites like MedicoSA which provide this option also enable the patient to view the doctor's profile, testimonies and reviews by other patients.

While technology keeps us on the go, it also ensures that our health is never compromised! By - Jessica

PHYSIOTHERAPY: A NECESSITY AT TIMES

Physical therapy is often known as a rehabilitative measure to cure or at least lesson the pain caused by physical ailments. It seeks to promote mobility, flexibility and restore function to body parts of humans after they have undergone injury or trauma. Physical therapy has a potential market among all types of demographics: the busy corporate types who have spent countless hours in board meetings and over computers, making presentations, the people who engage in hard labour, housewives who do backbreaking work, people who are regulars at the gym, athletes and sportspersons who are extremely privy to injury and thus need regular physical treatments.  It is important for the patient to share a level of trust and comfort with their physiotherapist, because joints and ligaments may sound like trivial components of our body which make up its entire structure. Even a small error in judgement or mishandling of a nerve can lead to huge complications. It is therefore extremely essential to invest in a good physiotherapist, with whom one can also share a bond of trust and comfort.

Dr. Ankit Garg, a physiotherapist as well as spine and pain specialist is one such doctor practicing in Indirapuram , specializes in Cervical(Neck) Pain, Spondolytis, Sprain, Spinal Cord Injury, Nerve Injuries, Muscle Spasm, Knee Joint Pain, Sciatica, Strain, Stroke(Hemiplegia), Paraplegi, Bells Palsy, Low Back Ache, Arthritis, all of which are common problems in this day and age. Appointments with Dr. Garg can be booked at MEDICOSA. By - Sukanya

ARE YOUR KIDNEYS AT RISK?

Kidney diseases are something, which people brush off as highly depressing problems that are meant for older people or a dying person in a melodramatic movie. This complacent approach towards kidney disease will lead us nowhere! If we knowingly or unknowingly abuse a part of our body, then it is bound to succumb to the pressure.
There are, of course, measures that one can take to be careful, like drinking plenty of fluids, avoiding self-harming habits like smoking and drinking and maintaining a healthy lifestyle in general. For people with chronic issues, it is always advisable to be armed with multiple backup plans if something goes wrong, like being in constant touch with their nephrologists and getting regular tests done. One can also be sure to catch the problem early by being aware of the symptoms / warning signs of kidney diseases. Having high blood pressure, frequent or painful urination, blood or protein in the urine, and swelling of the hands and feet are some of them.
It always helps to go for periodic check ups and visits to the nephrologist, i.e. a physician who specializes in kidney function, to be aware of things that are going on in our body, which we cannot physically keep track of. Thankfully, with an abundance of doctors and hospitals and the increasing ease with which appointments can be booked, this does not seem like a hurdle. By - Sukanya

THE SURGERY SHENANIGANS

Neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, cataract removal surgery, plastic surgery, transplants, this surgery, that surgery…we’ve heard them all. While some surgeries are life saving procedures performed under great complications, some are unnecessarily prescribed to make money off of people and some, on the other hand, are willfully undertaken by people to take a few years off their face, pull up that sagging skin or just twirl a magic wand and change the features of their body that they like the least. The crux of the issue is that surgery has become a necessary evil. Going under the knife after a certain age is unpreventable due to a plethora of common ailments like knee replacement, hip replacement, uterus removal, heart issues and so on.

While some uber healthy people may be able to dodge the surgery bullet entirely, it is imperative for the rest of us mortals to take certain precautions before taking the leap. Step 1; make sure your doctor is trustworthy. No, REALLY make sure that he or she is suggesting surgery as the last resort. Then, get comfy with your laptop and research on how you can make this surgery easy for yourself and prepare yourself accordingly, for example research on what foods to eat or to avoid during that phase of fragility your body is going through and what activities not to indulge in so as to not strain your body. Also, pick a friend or family member and assign to them the task of helping you come out the other end of the tunnel with your chin up. Hand them the sole responsibility of taking care of you. And that’s it! You can do it. Will power and a little creativity with the way you handle the serious stuff is all it takes to survive it. Good luck! By - Sukanya

THE SAD STORY OF OUR COUNTRY

Go to a backward area or just pay heed to the streets on a red light and you'll see a lot of beggars. This brings in a very sad and disturbing image of India's poverty. While poverty is due to lack of money or resources, it is not an isolated issue. You must have seen a lot of differently abled people or people with cut or broken body parts, specially in the poor areas. This shows that poverty and ailments are interlinked. A lot of people suffer from diseases or have deformities due to accidents or infection, and most of them are unable to get treatment, with a lot of these people belonging to poor families. This is due to lack of resources, infrastructure and technology in the poor areas. It is also because of the expensive treatments provided in metropolitan cities and the distance factor as well.

An orthopaedist, is an orthopaedics surgeon who deals with diseases or ailments concerning the muscular and skeleton system. There is an acute shortage of orthopaedist in our country and a lot of people go untreated due to this. Also, the equipments and technology that we have is not 100 per cent efficient which makes most of the treatments quite expensive. This can be resolved only if the information technology sector and infrastructure of the country, along with the manpower are improved. By – Jessica

WORDS OF WISDOM BY PEDIATRICIANS

Recently, I've read a lot of interviews with pediatricians and have even conducted one. I got to know many interesting as well as bizarre things about the health care industry and child health care. I'm just compiling the all of them for a casual read.

All pediatricians say that pediatrics, as a field has grown rapidly in the past 50 years. Earlier, it was a lesser opted path for doctors and now it has become an individual subject with its own subsets and supersets. This also resulted in late realisation of infant and child health care which is why India has such high number of child deaths due to infections and diseases. Also, India has the highest number of births as well as deaths in the world, 25 per cent and 30 per cent respectively. There are a lot of imbalances in our country, like the wide gap between urban and rural areas, rich and poor, and the state to state/ culture to culture difference. The pediatricians feel that while vaccines have decreased the number of child infected cases, it had not helped a large proportion of the country due to its high cost before the government started subsidising them. Now, around 80 per cent children are covered by subsidised or sponsored vaccines. Pediatricians also believe that ignorance, religious and cultural belief are an important challenge in the face of child care industry.

A highly experienced and renowned pediatrician as well as adolscent endicronologist, Dr. IPS Kochar works as a senior consultant in Apollo Hospital, Sarita Vihar and Fortis Hospital, Noida. He has also been associated with prominent hospitals and institutions across the world like Great Ormond Street Hospital, which is one of the best tertiary referral child centers in the world. EAR, NOSE, THROAT: WAKE UP!

Physicians commonly referred to as Ear – nose – throat specialists are in actuality supposed to be called “otolaryngologists”. What a mouthful, indeed! We all know that the ears, the nose and the throat are essential parts of our body and yet they are ignored till we get that throbbing pain in the ear, or that sore throat that just won’t get better, or the runny nose, which is an eternal disgrace, for reasons we just can’t seem to comprehend. Our thought process goes like this: I didn’t go running outside when it was 10 degrees with wet hair, so why is life punishing me with this godforsaken cold? Well, time for some education. You don’t get a cold because of the temperature outside; you get it by being infected with the viruses that cause it! It is the knowledge of such simple things that saves hours of brainstorming and helps shield our bodies from further illnesses.
Ear buds are the worst enemy of the ear, because they push the earwax further inside and this is an example of the sort of things you would know if you visited an ENT specialist every once in a while. It is also a subtle reminder that Google is not the answer to everything and there is a reason why doctors exist: they’re human!

This is not to say that you should book a permanent slot at the ENT’s clinic every Saturday. It is just a subtle warning that things could go very wrong if ignored over a prolonged period.  By - Sukanya

THE OPHTHALMOLOGIST'S OPINION

Just like other organs of the body, your eyes need protection and at times treatment too.there are two eye doctors, optometrist and ophthalmologist. While an optometrist is concerned with vision and eyesight, an ophthalmologist deals with diseases and ailments of the eye and performs eye surgeries.

Interviews with a lot of ophthalmologists show that on an average an ophthalmologist see 200 patients in a week out of which about 50 are surgery encounters. They feel that the challenging part is the minor complications which require a lot of physical examinations. There are around 18,000 ophthalmologists in the country and about fifty of them practice in Noida. This number is very low and it is one of the main reasons as to why India homes the largest number of blind people. About 85% of the rural areas don't even have an eye care cell, let alone an ophthalmologist. This could be due to the less number of schools providing an education in eye care or the high cut throat competition in which only the top 5% candidates become an ophthalmologist.

Talking about the norms like eating carrot or drinking its juice and eating spinach, ophthalmologists believe that while no food helps in improving vision, carrots or other Vitamin A food can improve only if poor vision was caused due to deficiency of Vitamin A which is rare in urban areas. Here, the prominent reason is eye strain and genetic factors.

GENERAL SURGERY: IT’S A GRIND

When one decides to take that first step in the 1000 mile journey of becoming a doctor, they know they are going to get into a profession where the hours are grueling, the work challenging and the promise of little to no personal life.
What encourages these young guns to take up such a profession which sounds like nothing but a load of work? There are a number of answers to that question. For some, it is the money. For others, it is the prestige and the status of having “Doctor” prefixed to their name. And then there are those who pursue this profession purely because of the fact that it is dedicated to the service of others. To make someone else’s life a little bit easier by sharing your own bits of knowledge with them. I am writing this with a certain friend of mine in mind, who was one of those people that have life figured out since the age of five and have a clear picture of what they want to become. She proudly announced to the entire class, when we were in grade five, that she would become a pediatrician. And as we grew up, she worked and toiled towards achieving this goal.
What changed was only her choice of specialty. Instead of going for pediatrics, which would have been relatively easier because it is one field, with one target group, she delved into the myriad field of general surgery, which demands much more of a doctor than a single focus medical field ever would. General surgery focuses on all kinds of surgical treatments for different diseases, thus reaching out to a larger demographic. Maybe this was her reason for choosing to become a general surgeon, to aim for the greater good.
It is people like these who inspire us to put ourselves last, and strive to work for the better of our fellow humans. By - Sukanya

LEPROSY: YOU CAN’T IGNORE IT ANYMORE!

We have our busy lives, friends to meet, parties to go to. Who cares about some depressing disease that we probably won’t be affected with? Well, it’s time to start caring, because leprosy happens to be a very significant part of medical history because it combines medicine with a sense of social responsibility. Leprosy patients need the help of us fortunate, healthy beings more and more each day. Why? So that following our example, the stigma attached to them in others’ minds crumbles slowly yet surely. Saying that leprosy spreads by touching is a sure shot sign of illiteracy.
Yes, it’s out in the open! Sure, leprosy may spread with constant direct exposure to fluids from a leprosy patient’s body but we are all, careful and smart enough to avoid such situations, aren’t we? So why do we not follow the stellar example of selflessness and compassion set by someone from our own country and extend a helping hand to someone who clearly needs it.
It is not just the job of hospital or social workers to care for those affected with leprosy. In fact, leave helping them out, even social acceptance can go a long way in changing the leprosy patient’s mindset to a positive one, thus speeding up the process of recovery. Imagine, you simply being courteous and nice to someone instead of being high nosed can actually change their life! So why not try something like that for a change, it’s free of cost, after all, and being nice never killed anyone 
