The significance and need for Geriatrics in today’s world.

Medicine is, more often than not, different for different age groups or different groups of people. For example, for the same disease or ailment, medications would be milder, for instance, for instance than for adults who fall victim to the same ailment with the same intensity. So, consequently, different age groups have separate sets of medications, diagnosis, treatment and curative procedures. The main aim, the main goal of geriatrics is to diagnose, prevent, treat and cure diseases and ailments in aged people.

However, here too, it is not a field where the strategies can be generalised. On the other hand, the decision for prescribing medications is based entirely on the individual needs of separate people; and also, on the availability of a particular specialist for the field of specialisation needed for the diagnosed ailment. In Delhi, geriatrics is a very recent development and is yet to reach an advanced state. Education however, is very important and competitive in this field too. It offers medical training, along with residency training, typically, post-graduate, of the order of a degree like a M.D.; which can be joined after the aspiring doctors complete their under-graduate course of MBBS, which again takes up around five and a half years.

However, it is important to note, that there are only 4 institutions in India, which provide advanced training and academic courses in this field. The branch of geriatrics is widely different from the templates of general adult medicine, as it is unique to the elderly people. The adult and aged human body, differs the normal adult body by a very wide margin. For instance, old age is, unlike normal middle – age, marked by a rapid decline of the efficiency and working of various organs of the body. It thus needs to advance a lot more and reach out all over the world. By- Rounak Bose

Doctors Online

We are born and as well as we die in the hands of Doctors. Doctors aren’t just only the people who wear white coats and have a stethoscope around their neck. Doctors are someone who anyone cannot be.

If we feel sick or meet with an accident apart from praying to God the first person we are taken to are doctors. They are life saviour. The term doctor is so wide that one can never understand what a Doctor is. There are different types of doctors and they all specialize in their own field like an Allergist deals with the allergies, Cardiologists deals with the disease related to heart, Dentists deals with the teeth and gum problems, ENT specialize in Ears Nose and Throat, etc. there are many more. So Doctors can cure your disease from your hairs to your toe.

To become a Doctor and to become a good Doctor is two different things. There are different degrees of Doctors like M.B.B.S., M.D.,etc. Doctors are the one who have got those degree but good Doctors are someone who has experience behind him. You have fever is easy to detect but steps to be taken to completely cure that is what a Doctor does.

Doctors are available at every hospital or even at clinics and these days with technology taking over you can find doctors online too. They have a tough job as they are never off duty. They have to be on their toes 24/7 so that their patients stay well. By-Jai Lal Chandani

DENTAL CLINICS -HABITAT OF DENTITSTS

In dental clinics, dentists provide different dental care. These clinics provide basic dental care which helps in:
  1. Preventing tooth decay
  2. Preventing periodontal or gum disease, which can degrade gum tissues and the bones that support jaw and teeth and in the long term it, can also lead to loss of teeth.
  3. It abbreviates time with dentist in the dental clinic and makes the trip more enjoyable.
  4. Conserves money, by stopping tooth decay and gum disease the need for fillings can be reduced and other costly procedures can be avoided.
  5. It also prevents bad breadth.
  6. It improves overall health; it makes it possible for teeth to last long.
  7. It also helps in whitening of teeth.
These Dental clinic provide clinically safe and effective environment for proper care of teeth and related problems. But, still if you wish not to visit a dentist or dental clinics, there are certain precautionary measures you should follow:
  1. Brushing your teeth twice a day, in morning and before going to bed. This detaches plaque, which could injure teeth, gums and surrounding bone.
  2. Use of fluoride containing toothpaste, which prevents tooth decay and other gum related problems. You can also ask your dentist to suggest a mouth, if you require.
  3. Intake of less sugar containing food. Sugar aggravates plaque.
  4. Usage of tongue cleaner. It is mainly important for those people who smoke as their tongues are coated or grooved.
  5. Minimize or stop using tobacco products.
One should schedule regular trips to a dental clinic based on how often you need cleansing. By- Medha Choudhary

What Does A Dentist Do?

Dentists are part and parcel of the medical and health care industry that delivers whole and complete treatment to the ailing patient. Unlike the trend that isolates dentistry from conventional medicine, it is fundamental and a segment of medicine itself. Dentists deal with the diagnosis, treatment of disease and care of the oral cavity. Dentistry doesn't isolate itself to the teeth alone, but also deals with the mouth as a whole, including gums, tongue and the deeper aspects of the oral mucosa.
Due to the increased prevalence and occurrence of poor dental hygiene and its potential public health hazard, dentists have the responsibility of maintenance and care of the society's health too.

The most common ailments tackled by dentists include cavities, inflamed gums and cosmetic corrections like placement and adjustment of braces. The dental community also forms a part of mainstream medical care through specializations like oral surgery and general dentistry. Most medical professionals have their own work spaces, where the art of their specialty is best reflected. In this hustle, many a times the professionalism overtakes the thoughts of the patient. Under such times, the dental clinic is a ray of sunshine. Decorated with lovely d'cor and wall paints dental clinics instantly put their patients at ease.

The staff that serve in the dental clinic vary from the doctors themselves to the technicians that help with the making and setting of dental implants, nurses that aid the doctor should there be a complex procedure, and the hygienists that tip outgoing patients with tailored advice on oral hygiene, care and maintenance. Most dental clinics are family run, enabling easier access and familiarity in society. This also enables the clinic to aid in curbing the growing menace that is poor oral hygiene. In times like these, dental clinics can go the extra mile, and spread awareness regarding the cavity we most often take for granted. By-Amaan

Health Promotion and Education- An Underrated Profession

‘Health is wealth’. ‘He who has health has hope’. We have heard countless such definitions stressing upon the importance of health. Still, the disease count is on the rise. Scientific technology has helped, but the main problem lies in the fact that people invite diseases to themselves by not being aware enough. People are misinformed regarding health facts which are why it was imperative that there were a profession that focused on promoting health education.
Health Education and Promotion is a profession that studies the behavior of body and how it changes in different environments. They study new policies and ensure that these policies are fully implemented in every corner of the country. These people are not physicians who treat diseases but there importance to the society is just as much, if not more.

This profession assesses the individual and community needs to come up with a systematic health plan to benefit the community as a whole. This health plan after development is implemented and managed carefully by the people. This is of huge benefit as it reduces the chance of catching a disease. As the people in this profession a less when compared to the population they have to cover, it is their duty to train new volunteers to carry forward their message and plans. Besides these duties, they have several other duties like organizing mass media campaigns, distributing government grants, conducting research etc. People in this profession are the unsung heroes who work at ground level to make the country better. Public Health and its significance

The health of an entity is its life force. The entity may be a single individual, or a society, or a community, or the entire global population taken together, or the environment, or any other living organism that is present on the earth; it is equally significant to the state of well being of each and every one in the context.  Public health is a broad sub-division of general health. It involves not only the physical, social and mental health and state of well – being of people but also the elimination and absence of diseases from the region in the context of public health. So it consequently also entails environmental health.
Multi – disciplinary teams working on these aspects of public health are the need of the hour. The team often also includes physicians who specialise in the maintenance of the health of the public and of the community and in medicine and infectious diseases. There are a large number of medicos and specialists from other fields as well, such as psychologists, epidemiologists, medical  assistants, dentists,  bio – statisticians, mid – wives, public health nurses, medical microbiologists, public health or environmental health officers, public health or environmental health sociologists, nutritionists, dieticians, veterinarians, public health engineer as well as public health lawyers, community workers for development of all over health, communication experts, bioethicists and so on and so forth.
Access to general health of the public and health care and initiatives is an area that thus has various disparities between nations which are developed and developing nations. The development of public health infrastructures is something that still needs working on, and at the present rate of development, one can rest assured that in the years to come public health will reach unprecedented heights. Bones- Locomotive organs of a human body

Bones are the locomotive organs of the humans. There are around two hundred and six bones in an adult body and all the bones are interconnected with each other. Without bones, man would only be made of muscles and locomotion would not have been possible. Therefore, humans should give the necessary medical care to bones.
There is a separate and specialized category in the field of medicine that is wholly devoted for the good health of the bones.
The field of medicine that is specialized in focusing on the prevention and the treatment of the musculoskeletal system is called orthopedics
A medical physician who specializes in the field of orthopedics is called an orthopedist or an orthopedic surgeon.
Orthopedic surgeons are usually assisted by nurses who are specialized in the field of orthopedics and are called as orthopedic nurses.
Orthopedic surgeons are given extra academic care unlike the general physicians. The entire body consists of bones and therefore the orthopedic surgeon will have to study and understand the nature of all the types of bones in the human body.
Therefore, it is very much necessary that the field of medicine requires orthopedic surgeons as they are the ones who will have a deep knowledge about bones and will be able to treat people who suffer from health issues related to bones more accurately and precisely diagnose the problem better than the normal health physicians.
Orthopedic surgeons are growing in an increased rate all around the country. There are a lot of specialty hospitals that are devoted especially for bone health. Few orthopedic surgeons have their own orthopedic clinics for the easier accessibility of the patients whereas as few other orthopedic surgeons collaborate with specialized hospitals that are devoted for the study and health of bone care.By: Pujha Ramesh

Neonatology In A Nutshell

Nothing in this world is there, that is as sensitive and care demanding than an infant. A healthy infant itself is a point of great concern to a family. Of course this comes as no surprise, as that is how delicate and healthy fragile newborns are. With this image, one can only compare and see how much more intense it must be to handle and care for a child that is born prematurely or with a defect.

Neonatologists, also called newborn specialists deal with exactly that. The care and revival of premature, underweight or congenitally affected infants that could have been due to genetic variance or predispostion. The skill and knowledge required in the neo natal intensive care unit to tend to such infants is high, and it's no surprise that neonatology is a super specialization under paediatric care. It would take over 8 years for a student to establish himself/herself as a fully fledged neonatologist that can cater to the needs of an ill born infant.

They are the epitome of paediatric care and has many sub branches, from systemic neonatology to neonatal surgeon. All of which comes with increased risk and higher rewards. It is also a specializaytion that needs a presence and strong emotion. All this makes a newborn specialist seem a bit morose but nothing could be further from the truth. It truly is the most rewarding and developing fields of modern paediatrics. By- Amaan

Protect the part of the body which protects you!

Skin has layers! It protects you from the environmental hazards that might cause dangerous diseases which we might not be aware off. Diseases could be genetic also which might be present before birth also. Genetic skin disorders are also handled by skin specialists. It was just 2 days back that a baby with the rarest skin disorder was born!
The baby had no skin on the entire body at all. If you talk in the medical language the rare skin disorder is known Harlequin ichthyosis. A team of child specialist and skin specialists took a special care of this case. This skin disorder was caused due to mutation of genes and such births happen like 1 in 300,000 kids!
Technology has become so advanced that skin grafting is a technique which is used to replace skin with some deformities but even this skin grafting wasn’t possible, that’s how critical this case was! Skin specialist had given their views on this and also mentioned that proper moisturizer and coconut oil would be good for the baby and of course nutrition needs to be taken care off because the requirement for everything has almost doubled but the astonishing fact was the baby had no breathing problems which can just be described as ‘AMAZING’ but unfortunately the baby wasn’t able to deal with this skin disorder and she died. The body is given to the laboratory for further researches which is carried out by a team of experts, skin specialists being the major and the most important part of the research. All we can say is, RIP little angel! By: Dt. Trishala Chopra

Your right to healthy smiles

Not all the clinics are same and I am sure you might have never tried visiting all the clinics! Dentist remains the same for you unless the dentist has shifted and cannot be reached, otherwise you never change dentist because he will know A-Z about the treatment he is giving you and going to give you. So coming back to clinic, what does dental clinics as a whole provide you?
The most common thing which is done in best of the clinics is full mouth rehabilitation which includes combination of different processes which will help in restoration of teeth and so on. The procedures which are usually include in this full mouth rehabilitation are dental implants, implants crowns and bridges, bridges, root canal, extraction procedures, bridges, gum surgeries, tooth filling, cap sizing, cap attaching and few more. Advanced dental treatments cannot be performed by just one doctor; entire team works on the same.
All the dentists are not same; they deal with teeth but they are not the same, in full mouth rehabilitation, when there is an implant it has to be done by implantologists, root canal treatment has to be done by an endodontist, extraction procedures are carried out by surgeons, crown and cap implantation is done by prothodondontist. Everyone is a dentist but their field of specialization is different and all of them should be available below one roof so that everyone who are experienced in their part and do and help the patient to recover asap! Your mother’s kitchen is the best chemist to find cures!

Few years down the line, Ayurveda and herbal things had lost their importance. Not many people were interested in this slow, yet a lifetime healer thing! Their busy lifestyles demanded quick access to get rid of the disease and get back to work. No one is free to sit back 15 days and identify if there are any symptoms because of the herb. We all need quick treatment because we cannot take leaves from the office!

The kind of we our living right now, it has forced us to go towards allopathy and in a case it is right. But the Ayurveda has again gained back its importance. With the knowledge and exposure of people towards herbal remedies, the meaning of medicine has now changed. Prevention has become more important than curing which is a very good way of taking care of your health. Medicines are there to treat you, the effects maybe short term, some may have side effects. Some may cause issues with your immunity or some can boost it.
It is all on how the drug is functioning and for what are you taking it. It is actually the body’s metabolism about how well it can tolerate a particular drug. Now every disease has medicines, some can be cured by therapies also which is again included in the field of science! Or to be more precise field of medicine! It is called as an alternative therapy which is usually covered under paramedical department. By: Dt. Trishala Chopra

Taking up the challenge to make this world Leprosy-free.

Leprosy is a disease, the name of which is enough to instil fear into the hearts of the patients. Even a few years back, it was as regarded with apprehension, as was cancer. This is because, leprosy is a highly lethal disease and a very nasty one too. Even though it is not highly contagious, contrary to popular disease, it still ranks high enough on the deadly-scale of diseases.
Leprosy is also named Hansen’s disease after the person who discovered it. The disease acts by means of infections and they may range from 5 years to 20 years in duration to activate. The main symptoms of leprosy are the granulomas of nerve cells and tissues, of our eyes, skin and even the respiratory tract. Eventually the patients can no longer feel any pain, and even when their extremities of their bodies fall off due to repeated injuries and infections, they cannot feel a thing. Physical weakness and poor eyesight are additional symptoms. However, leprosy is curable too, with the correct medications. For the case of paucibacillary disease, daily dapsone and monthly rifampicin is to be given for 6 months. However, for multibacillary forms of the disease, daily dapsone and clofazimine accompanied by monthly rifampicin is to be provided for tweleve consecutive months.
Nowadays, MDT or Multi – Drug Therapy is highly effective for curing leprosy and thus patients are no longer conatgious after the first one-month dose. Very safe and also easy to use and apply in field conditions, because of its present representation in calendar blister packs it is highly effective. The relapse rates of leprosy also have remained quite low, and no side effects or internal resistance to this combined drug therapy has been observed, thus making it a very suitable treatment for leprosy and also making sure that in the years to come, the people of the earth will be able to lead leprosy-free times. Regularity with your body is the key to have healthy body

Are to advised to do your complete body check-up regularly within 4 months? And are you religiously following it? If yes, I am sure you are listening to your family doctor and he is keeping a complete check on whether you are doing it or no. Excellence and years of experience is the key to become a family doctor!
If you go to a new doctor, he will give you a list of test which you need to do and do it repetitively. Some of the test might be of no use to you but still you need to do it. It is not your doctor’s fault; the main thing is he doesn’t know have much idea about you so the test becomes mandatory for you. If you have a family doctor, you get saved from the unnecessary tests because he knows what is good for you and most importantly what is needed for you.
He will give you things which is more relevant for you. Just for an instance, if there is a history of high blood pressure in your family, doctor will make sure that he gives you instructions to monitor your blood pressure very frequently. He will suggest you few dietary and lifestyle changes which will help you manage your blood pressure. He can give all these suggestions because he knows you, he knows about your family and future health risks for you which gives him an added advantage to do a quick and better diagnosis. By: Dt. Good health and positive mind are the only assets which you must give your child

My child doesn’t eat anything! He is so weak doctor! Please tell me what should I do? Is there are medicine which can make him eat? Yes, such type of questions does arise, which is sometimes okay because of the current lifestyle people are getting into. Chips and biscuits are their new lunch and cola’s and other soft drinks are their new health drink!

Importance of traditional meal is lost somewhere and regularity of including milk in a child’s diet is being ignored and this is the main reason behind big diseases occurring in small children. Here comes the role of a child specialist. It is very important to educate people about good health. Importance of milk in a child’s diet must be explained so that kids don’t loose on the important nutrients which they fetch out of milk.

Along with the treatment, child specialist must have a deep knowledge and must be an excellent educator. This will not only help people understand the importance of food but it will also help in a better growth of their child. For being an educator it is very important to have a sound knowledge about the subject they are talking about. Unlike physicians, child specialist focus only on things or problems which a child faces and what needs to be done to get rid of those problems which is only restricted to children! By: Dt. The Importance of Paediatric Care

Child care is of paramount importance for the welfare and growth of not just the child but also, the family as well. A general practitioner may not be able to confer the same amount of knowledge and care to an ill child whereas a paediatrcian might be able to do just that. The fear of going to a specialised doctor for specific care is a gamble in most indian adults' heads in fear of critical diagnoses and invasive tests requested by the paediatrician

In a child, owing to the potential risk of congenital anomalies, genetic variations and enviromental risks that may seem irrelevant in his/her childhood but can be life threatening later on, a paediatrician is a child's best friend when it comes to 110% care and comfort. His vast experience in child physiology and understanding of child behaviour enable him to understand and diagnose with no bias and all while keeping the child at ease.

Their in depth knowledge of child health programmes such as vaccination schedules, nutritional requirements and developmental milestones make them the perfect point of reference for any matter revelant to your child as compared to a nutritions expert or a public health worker. The innate understanding of a child will only be seen in a paediatric doctor, and he/she will only administer what's best for your child, because they're tending to the future, not of the state but also the family. Picture Archiving and Communication Systems..

Digging up my closet, searching for a poster I came across a rare relic that never used to leave my pocket, my Walk-men. The progress has been so, that walk-men shifted to disc-men and now we have the revolutionary Ipods with us.  Who knew one day that listening to music would be this easy and would also accompany the pleasure of viewing whatever one can listen. Progress in print media has also seen a substantial change. Where people resort to e-books these days; documents, reports and statistical files all can be accessed and soft-copied.

Medical reports and conditions with pictorial representations have been made readily available to people and health care organizations over a wide variety of subjects is made possible with the use of PACS.  PACS stand for Pictorial Archiving and Communication systems. The basic idea is to store, archive medical conditions and access them at any instant. A distributed workforce delivering efficient workflow with a comprehensive solution, all done in a web based portal is the sole idea behind PACS. To make this work, Digtial Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DIGICOM)  is the platform that PACS make use of.

Remote sensing is the aspect that helps practitioners diagnose and give proper knowledge to people seeking information all around the globe. This makes viewing of subjects and conducting of tests possible for professionals because at the end of the day the mind does not know what the eye does not see. By- Shahzad
