The significance and need for Geriatrics in today’s world.

Medicine is, more often than not, different for different age groups or different groups of people. For example, for the same disease or ailment, medications would be milder, for instance, for instance than for adults who fall victim to the same ailment with the same intensity. So, consequently, different age groups have separate sets of medications, diagnosis, treatment and curative procedures. The main aim, the main goal of geriatrics is to diagnose, prevent, treat and cure diseases and ailments in aged people.

However, here too, it is not a field where the strategies can be generalised. On the other hand, the decision for prescribing medications is based entirely on the individual needs of separate people; and also, on the availability of a particular specialist for the field of specialisation needed for the diagnosed ailment. In Delhi, geriatrics is a very recent development and is yet to reach an advanced state. Education however, is very important and competitive in this field too. It offers medical training, along with residency training, typically, post-graduate, of the order of a degree like a M.D.; which can be joined after the aspiring doctors complete their under-graduate course of MBBS, which again takes up around five and a half years.

However, it is important to note, that there are only 4 institutions in India, which provide advanced training and academic courses in this field. The branch of geriatrics is widely different from the templates of general adult medicine, as it is unique to the elderly people. The adult and aged human body, differs the normal adult body by a very wide margin. For instance, old age is, unlike normal middle – age, marked by a rapid decline of the efficiency and working of various organs of the body. It thus needs to advance a lot more and reach out all over the world. By- Rounak Bose
