Diabetologist- Medical professional who provides expert management to the patients suffering from DM

The World Health Organization defines Diabetes Mellitus (DM) as a heterogeneous metabolic disorder, which is characterized by a common feature of chronic hyperglycaemia (i.e. Raised Blood Sugar Levels).
A Diabetologist is a medical professional who provides expert management to the patients suffering from DM.
He/She is an UG Graduate i.e. MBBS having a Post Graduation Degree (i.e. MD) as an endocrinologist, with specialization in treatment of Diabetes Mellitus.
DM is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality all over the world.
The incidence is rising in almost all developed nations, owing to the sedentary lifestyle (i.e. Reduced Physical Activity) and obesity.
The reason of DM being of such a concern is its complications, viz:
Loss Of Sensations
Gangrene
(In certain cases of gangrene, the last stage is amputation)
Diabetic Foot
Blindness
A Diabetologist decides the treatment protocol, based on two factors:
Type Of DM
Age of the patient
Functionally, Diabetes Mellitus is of two types:
Type  I DM
The Type I DM is also called as Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM), because in this condition, there is a defect in the Insulin Secretion from the Beta Cells of Islets Of Endocrine Pancreas, and hence Insulin Therapy is recommended for such patients.
Because of its occurrence in the young, it was earlier called as Juvenile Onset Diabetes.
Type II DM
The Type I DM is also called as Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM) as there is Normal Secretion, but poor uptake of insulin by the cells. By- Dt. Trishala Chopra
