The human kidney performs many functions that help in general systemic maintenance of well being. This is primarily achieved by the main function of the kidney which is excretion. The main units of the kidney, called nephrons are the ones that primarily maintain and effect this aspect of the kidney. A tubule with a link to the blood vessels, the nephrons responsibly absorb and reabsorb substances from blood that have to be excreted. But any damage to this tubule can hinder this vital body function.
Nephrologists are super specialty doctors that have spent extensive time in research, treatment and management of nephron based diseases. These doctors are a part of tertiary care owing to their specialization. Diseases that need the investigation of the nephrologist include inflammations of the nephrons, cellular damage of the epithelium (cells that line the inside of the tubules), and tumour conditions owing to malignant cells or a metastatic spread.
