Our
body is so marvelous and complex, that we aren’t even aware of half
the things it is made of ! For example, we know we have a lot of
blood coursing through our veins ( who doesn’t !?!), but do we know
what all it is made of ? The recipe of complex and minute elements
that amalgamate to form this life giving elixir is a mystery to most
people.
Long
story short, there is a component called serum found in our blood,
which forms antibodies to fight infectious diseases. These antibodies
are life saving to such an extent that the serum from a person who
has recovered from a particular disease, can be used to treat a
person suffering from the same disease, since the serum in question
has successfully produced antibodies that have helped combat the
disease, effectively creating an immunity. This is known as an “anti
serum” and is a major part of what is called immunotherapy.
The study of serums is called
serology, and serology can be and is being used to study patterns of
diseases across populations, as well as the cause and effects of
these diseases. Serology is an excellent example of how
science, specially biology, can combine with other disciplines to
