Anaesthesia
is something which we do not come across in our daily life’s…We
do not even meet these specialists on daily basis…But still they
play a very important role. Have you by chance undergone a tooth or
gum surgery…if yes…Have you imagined that why don’t you feel
the terrible pain during that surgery? All you feel is heaviness in
the mouth! Thanks to anaesthetics which save you from the pain! You
are never completely sleepy during a gum or tooth surgery or let’s
take labour pain for that instance, if at all you have seen a
C-section delivery you might be imagining that how a woman is awake
during that time, she isn’t feeling the pain? She does feel the
pain but because of those anaesthetics
the pain isn’t reaching the brain which means loss of sensation! A
wonderful drug…isn’t it!
Local
and general anaesthetics are the most commonly used anaesthetics!
Local
anaesthetics are used during minor operations to numb a particular
part such as during gum surgery or any other minor surgeries where
the patient is aware of the procedure taking place, can see the
procedure but cannot feel it.
General
anaesthetics are used during serious and bigger procedures where the
patient is recovered to be completely unconscious and he/she isn’t
even aware of the procedure and can neither feel it!
There
are other types of anaesthesia also given apart from these two which
are as follows:-
(1)
Epidural anaesthesia is usually given to numb the lower part of the
body mainly during labour.
(2)
Spinal anaesthesia is given during operations which requires numbness
for more than 3 hours
(3)
Sedation anaesthesia is given which induces sleep and keeps you calm
during painful procedures. By - Trishala
