MEDICAL PHYSICS: DOUBLE TROUBLE?

For patrons of the arts, like myself, these two words sound heavy enough to sink our artistic ship - Medicine and physics, both? Together? Seems like nothing short of a nightmare, and something, which is definitely beyond our comprehension. But sit back and relax.

There is nothing so complicated about medical physics that we cannot understand. As the self explanatory term entails, medical physics is the application of the principles of physics to the field of medicine. Medicine needs physics to have a curative effect. To arrive at a cure for a disease, physics is needed. For example, a patient shows symptoms like nausea, vomiting, headache and so on.

To identify the exact cause or to confirm suspicions, oftentimes an X ray is needed, and in more severe cases, a CT scan is needed. And that is where physics comes in. That’s it! That’s how simple the term and its meaning are. The fascinating comradeship of medicine and physics seeks to combat and destroy a number of diseases, which each field on its own could not have managed to do. So, there it is, the highly destructive sounding words, simply explained! By - Sukanya
