Physicians
commonly referred to as Ear – nose – throat specialists are in
actuality supposed to be called “otolaryngologists”. What a
mouthful, indeed! We all know that the ears, the nose and the throat
are essential parts of our body and yet they are ignored till we get
that throbbing pain in the ear, or that sore throat that just won’t
get better, or the runny nose, which is an eternal disgrace, for
reasons we just can’t seem to comprehend. Our thought process goes
like this: I didn’t go running outside when it was 10 degrees with
wet hair, so why is life punishing me with this godforsaken cold?
Well, time for some education. You don’t get a cold because of the
temperature outside; you get it by being infected with the viruses
that cause it! It is the knowledge of such simple things that saves
hours of brainstorming and helps shield our bodies from further
illnesses.
Ear
buds are the worst enemy of the ear, because they push the earwax
further inside and this is an example of the sort of things you would
know if you visited an ENT specialist every once in a while. It is
also a subtle reminder that Google is not the answer to everything
and there is a reason why doctors exist: they’re human!
This is
not to say that you should book a permanent slot at the ENT’s
clinic every Saturday. It is just a subtle warning that things could
go very wrong if ignored over a prolonged period. By - Sukanya
