THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF IMMUNITY

Everyone is different. Really. Each person is made up of unique cells, atoms and molecules. Each one of us has a different genetic make up, and that is what makes all of us unique. It makes all the more challenging for the practitioners of medicine to cure! Our immune system is an integral structure in our body, which protects us against diseases. It is what keeps your common cold from escalating into full-fledged pneumonia.
To think what would happen if our immune system gets compromised is certainly unnerving. Basically, it is the defense system of the body. Clinical immunology studies the very diseases that affect our disease fighting mechanism. Intriguing, indeed! There are different types of immunology, ranging from immunotherapy, cancer immunology, diagnostic immunology, to reproductive immunology. Different types of diseases affect the immune system differently. Allergies are also a type of immune disorder, though they may not seem so important while looking at the bigger picture. However, no immune disorder is too small, as one minor complication can be responsible for a collapse in our entire human body function. Therefore, it is important to be aware of one’s allergies and not ignore certain medical conditions or implications of impending problems. By - Sukanya

ARE YOU HEALTHY ENOUGH?

If you have long work hours, loads of household chores, are socially very active and glued to your electronic gadgets, I'm assuming that you're compromising on your health while keeping up with the rapid pace of the expanding world. While it's important to earn your bread and butter, be updated about the rest of the world, stay in touch with your friends and relatives, it's equally important to live a healthy life.

We all perceive the term 'healthy' in different ways and the most acceptable definition of healthy would be a state of condition in which you're physically, mentally and emotionally stable. You're free of diseases, are fit and lead a safe and jolly life. This may sounds notional to some but living a healthy life is very much possible.

We must exercise or do some physical activity daily, follow a healthy diet, drink fluids and sleep well. We must also consult a doctor periodical and get regular health check-ups done. This ensures that we're completely free of all diseases. A doctor should also be consulted in case of any health related ambiguity.

Nowadays, thanks to the Internet, book online appointment with doctors has become damn easy. No emails, text messages or phone calls are required, just a single mouse click. Also, sites like MedicoSA which provide this option also enable the patient to view the doctor's profile, testimonies and reviews by other patients.

While technology keeps us on the go, it also ensures that our health is never compromised! By - Jessica

THE SURGERY SHENANIGANS

Neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, cataract removal surgery, plastic surgery, transplants, this surgery, that surgery…we’ve heard them all. While some surgeries are life saving procedures performed under great complications, some are unnecessarily prescribed to make money off of people and some, on the other hand, are willfully undertaken by people to take a few years off their face, pull up that sagging skin or just twirl a magic wand and change the features of their body that they like the least. The crux of the issue is that surgery has become a necessary evil. Going under the knife after a certain age is unpreventable due to a plethora of common ailments like knee replacement, hip replacement, uterus removal, heart issues and so on.

While some uber healthy people may be able to dodge the surgery bullet entirely, it is imperative for the rest of us mortals to take certain precautions before taking the leap. Step 1; make sure your doctor is trustworthy. No, REALLY make sure that he or she is suggesting surgery as the last resort. Then, get comfy with your laptop and research on how you can make this surgery easy for yourself and prepare yourself accordingly, for example research on what foods to eat or to avoid during that phase of fragility your body is going through and what activities not to indulge in so as to not strain your body. Also, pick a friend or family member and assign to them the task of helping you come out the other end of the tunnel with your chin up. Hand them the sole responsibility of taking care of you. And that’s it! You can do it. Will power and a little creativity with the way you handle the serious stuff is all it takes to survive it. Good luck! By - Sukanya

GENERAL MEDICINE : NEVER TOO LATE TO START CARING

We, as humans, ironically ignore the very miraculous vessel we live in – our body. It’s there for us ALL the time, tries to work despite being abused with foreign substances like fast food, soda, alcohol and tobacco and strives to perform all the basic functions necessary to keep us alive. But our inherent selfishness forces us to avoid thinking about the consequences of our actions by living in the moment, which is a good thing but may not necessarily be so in the long run.
So instead of being shocked at the “betrayal” of your body when you suddenly find yourself in bed, sick, we should start taking good care of it immediately. Apart from the clichéd suggestions of eating healthy and getting regular exercise, there is one solid suggestion that could not only help prevent further damage to your organs but might, just might help undo the damage already done. And that, people, is consulting a general physician, who is, as the name suggests, a doctor who practices general medicine and is the go to person to erase all your queries about being in perfect shape.
A general medicine practitioner is familiar with the workings of all parts and organs of the body and can even detect a problem in one part of the body by examining another. Which is why it is time to kick that know it all ego to the curb and seek help, because your life can be way better than it already is and you know it! By - Sukanya
