Health Promotion and Education- An Underrated Profession

‘Health is wealth’. ‘He who has health has hope’. We have heard countless such definitions stressing upon the importance of health. Still, the disease count is on the rise. Scientific technology has helped, but the main problem lies in the fact that people invite diseases to themselves by not being aware enough. People are misinformed regarding health facts which are why it was imperative that there were a profession that focused on promoting health education.
Health Education and Promotion is a profession that studies the behavior of body and how it changes in different environments. They study new policies and ensure that these policies are fully implemented in every corner of the country. These people are not physicians who treat diseases but there importance to the society is just as much, if not more.

This profession assesses the individual and community needs to come up with a systematic health plan to benefit the community as a whole. This health plan after development is implemented and managed carefully by the people. This is of huge benefit as it reduces the chance of catching a disease. As the people in this profession a less when compared to the population they have to cover, it is their duty to train new volunteers to carry forward their message and plans. Besides these duties, they have several other duties like organizing mass media campaigns, distributing government grants, conducting research etc. People in this profession are the unsung heroes who work at ground level to make the country better. Health isn’t a goal; it is a way of living!

How often do you go for blood tests? Not many people do that unless they find any symptom which requires your blood test to be done! Hardly 5% of the population goes for regular blood tests! Why is that so? isn’t it important to get it done? It is but either there is some time constraint or people are lazy to do that! India has now been declared as polio free country! There are no new cases which has been detected in the years! How has this happened? Because people have finally realized the importance of the vaccination! The credit goes to our government! Their hard work and their awareness strategies has paid off!

In Delhi, free polio vaccination booths are organised every two months and it is made sure that every child is given the vaccination. It sometimes happens that parents could not make it to the booths because of some genuine reason. So that doesn’t mean that their child will not get vaccination for that particular month! Government has made door to door service available! The social workers visit every house and check if there is any child who has not got the vaccination.

There is a black ink mark which is being applied on a child’s hand which proves that the child is given the vaccination for polio! The government is striving hard to get rid of polio and they finally have succeeded! Nothing is attained individually…everyone has to work for it! If awareness programs are being organised one should make sure that they attend that program. This motivation has to come from within and no one can force anyone on this! By - Trishala

ARE YOU HEALTHY ENOUGH?

The advent of technology has truly been a blessing to mankind. Not only has it made tasks simpler but also increased the efficiency a million times. We do not realize this, but technology has affected all of us, directly as well as indirectly. It has helped the economy and accelerated the growth process, it has made communication faster and simpler, reduced man work or labour and has changed our mindsets and the way we live our lives as well. It has also given us a lot of time for recreation.

Most of the people are spending this 'me time' on their interests and lifestyle habits. People are also prioritizing their health and working towards a fitter being. This is quite evident from the fact that you can easily spot a gymnasium or a health centre at every corner. A lot of celebrities are also promoting wellness on their social media networks. The government too is not lagging behind and is promoting healthcare through campaigning and various schemes. It is also promoting health care education in primary and secondary classes.

Physical education classes are held in school to not just promote wellness but also to encourage students to adopt a healthy lifestyle. These classes also help the students develop interest in various physical activities and they bring laurels to the school, making it a win-win situation. Noida, a part of Delhi NCR and a premier city of the country homes excellent health care and recreation centres. It also has some of the best doctors and hospitals. By - Jessica
