There
have been countless stories of how scientists have sacrificed
themselves for the greater good of mankind. All of these sacrifices
are to be cherished and respected but if there is one such story
which stands out from the lot, it is the story of the sacrifice of
Madam Marie Curie. Credited with the invention of radioactive
substances at a time when its advantages and disadvantages were not
known, she succumbed to its effects but not before gifting mankind
the cure for the most feared disease known, cancer.
Further
research and study followed and what we got is the procedure without
which the treatment of cancer would not have become possible. That
procedure goes by the name of radiation therapy. We have all
heard that saying about how only poison can neutralize poison. Never
before this quotation has felt truer than in this case where one
fatal substance is used to cure a person of another fatal disease.
Radiation
therapy uses ionized radiation on the infected part of the body to
damage the DNA of that particular part leading to cellular death. The
allied professional who carries out this process is called a
radiologist. Like every other medical procedure, it comes with
its own set of side effects but when life is at stake, not many
people care about side effects. Radiation therapy has made large
strides in the field of medical science and one can expect that to
continue with more research being done in this area. By - Vatsal
